CBS De Spiegel in The Hague
At CBS De Spiegel, active and engaged learning is key. The school believes that children develop best when learning and exercise go hand in hand. With the introduction of physical learning, the school sought a solution that would both motivate and fit in with daily teaching. The X-Wall proved to be a valuable and energising addition.
Physical learning as an integrated part of the curriculum
At CBS De Spiegel, the school focuses on engagement, inclusivity, and talent development. The school believes it is important that every child, regardless of level or background, can actively participate and develop in their own way. This is reflected in the broad range of educational opportunities on offer, in which music, art, digital literacy and physical education, among other things, play an important role. Within this approach, active learning is playing an increasingly important role, with the X-Wall as a valuable addition.
A conscious step towards physical learning
The school wanted to introduce physical learning in a structural way. The PE teacher went in search of a suitable solution that would make this possible in an accessible and appealing manner. The aim was to introduce something new that would immediately attract attention and encourage colleagues to integrate physical learning into their lessons.
The X-Wall was a good fit for this goal. Not only as an eye-catcher to give the project a strong start, but also as a practical tool for automating and repeating course materials. The ambition is for more and more teachers to use the X-Wall as part of their regular teaching.
Physical learning in practice
The X-Wall is used during physical education lessons in the activity room. The pupils are split into two groups: some work with physical materials, while the others get to play with the X-Wall. Halfway through, the groups switch so that everyone stays active and the class keeps things varied.
The emphasis is mainly on arithmetic and literacy. Lessons covered in class are revisited on the X-Wall in interactive games. Coordination with other classroom teachers ensures that the programme ties in well with what is happening in the classroom. The X-Wall thus functions as an extension of the regular lessons rather than a separate activity.
Although there was some doubt beforehand about the digital aspect, because pupils already work a lot with interactive whiteboards in the classroom, it soon became clear that the X-Wall offers something completely different. Physical activity is central, and it is precisely this combination of learning and being active that makes it appealing to the children.
Enriching the learning process
The combination of movement and learning is considered essential at CBS De Spiegel. Getting out of your chair, being physically active and then continuing with the classroom activity provides variety and re-energises the students. This variety contributes to motivation and concentration throughout the school day.
Engaged pupils
Pupils respond eagerly when they get to use the X-Wall. It feels like something special, especially for pupils who are trying it out for the first time. That curiosity ensures a high level of engagement during classes.
Having fun while learning
The greatest added value of the X-Wall is learning while moving. Pupils spend less time sitting still, engage in activities and enjoy learning more. For CBS De Spiegel, the X-Wall has been a strong start for the subject of kinesthetic learning: a visible, activating solution that immediately gave the project momentum and direction.
For everyone
Some children learn more easily from reading books, while others benefit from learning through movement. The X-Wall supports these differences and offers teachers an additional way to present teaching topics that are aligned with the needs of each individual student.
